The native incretin hormone. Swapping Ala8 for Aib, Lys34 for Arg and attaching a C18 fatty diacid to Lys26 turns it into semaglutide, extending its half-life from about 2 minutes to about one week.

What peptides are

Short chains with precise jobs

A peptide is a chain of amino acids joined by amide (peptide) bonds. By convention, chains of roughly 2 to 50 residues are peptides; longer, folded chains are proteins.

In the body, peptides act as hormones, neurotransmitters, growth factors and antimicrobial defences. They bind their targets with high selectivity, which gives them fewer off-target effects than many small molecules.

Their weakness is stability: proteases cleave them within minutes and the kidneys clear them fast. Much of modern peptide research is about engineering around that, with cyclisation, non-natural amino acids, lipidation and PEGylation.

Reference peptides we study

Sequences in one-letter code. Molecular weights are average masses in daltons. Filter by field or search by name or sequence.

PeptideSequenceResiduesMW (Da)FieldStatus

Lower-case letters mark D-amino acids. Aib = α-aminoisobutyric acid. K* = lipidated lysine. Status refers to regulatory approval in the EU and/or US; "investigational" compounds are not approved for human use.
